Building Custom Under-Bed Storage Drawers

Space beneath a bed is often relegated to a graveyard for lost socks and dust bunnies, but it represents the most valuable hidden storage real estate in your home. By building custom-fit rolling crates, you transform that dead zone into a structured, accessible system for off-season clothing, extra linens, or bulk storage. Done well, these drawers should glide silently on your flooring and disappear completely when pushed home. Building these is a straightforward afternoon project that favors precision in measurement over advanced carpentry skills. The goal is to build a frame that is just enough smaller than the height of your bed rails to allow for the wheels, without wasting vertical volume. Focus on using quality plywood and sturdy casters, and you will have a storage solution that outlasts the bed frame itself.

1. Measure Twice, Build Once. Measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the bed rail, then subtract one inch for clearance. Determine the length and width of your drawer boxes based on the available floor space under your bed, ensuring they don't hit center support legs.
2. Square Cuts Save Headaches. Rip your 3/4-inch plywood into side, front, and back panels according to your calculated dimensions. Ensure your cuts are square, as even a minor angle will cause the drawer to track crookedly.
3. Glue and Screw Tight. Apply wood glue to the joints and secure the sides to the base and each other using 1-5/8 inch wood screws. Pre-drill every hole to prevent the plywood edges from splitting.
4. Roll It Smooth. Flip the boxes over and attach a swivel caster to each of the four corners, approximately two inches from the edges. Ensure the screws securing the casters are shorter than the thickness of your base plywood so they don't poke through into your storage space.
5. Sand and Seal It. Lightly sand all edges to remove splinters and apply a coat of interior stain or paint to match your bedroom decor. Allow the finish to cure completely for 24 hours to prevent odors from soaking into your stored clothing.
6. Test Before You Stow. Slide the finished drawers under the bed and roll them back and forth multiple times. If they catch or scrape, adjust the height or placement of the casters until movement is smooth.
