How to Install Surface-Mounted Electrical Conduit

Conduit is the professional solution for adding power where your home's original design failed to put an outlet. Instead of tearing into studs and patching messy drywall, you attach rigid or EMT conduit directly to the surface of the wall. It turns your garage or workshop into a modular workspace that can grow alongside your projects. Done well, a conduit run looks intentional and clean. It follows the lines of the wall, turns corners at perfect ninety-degree angles, and stays securely anchored to the studs. When you prioritize tight measurements and level mounting, the final result is a durable, industrial-grade electrical installation that meets safety standards and protects your wires from everyday bumps and scrapes.

  1. Visualize the Route First. Mark the exact location for your boxes and the route for the conduit on the wall. Use a level to ensure your horizontal lines are perfectly straight and your vertical drops align with where you intend to mount the boxes.
  2. Anchor Boxes Perfectly Plumb. Secure your surface-mount utility boxes directly to the wall studs using wood screws. Ensure they are plumb so that your conduit entries line up perfectly with the box knockouts.
  3. Cut and Ream Conduit Ends. Measure the distance between boxes or fittings, subtracting the length that seats into the connector. Cut your EMT conduit using a hacksaw or a dedicated conduit cutter, then ream the inside edge to remove sharp burrs.
  4. Strap Every Three Feet. Attach conduit straps to the wall every three feet and within twelve inches of every box or fitting. Tighten the straps firmly so the pipe cannot shift or vibrate.
  5. Thread Wires Through Smoothly. Feed your THHN electrical wires through the conduit system using a fish tape if the run is long or has multiple bends. Ensure you have at least six inches of extra wire extending from each box for making connections.
  6. Terminate with Proper Polarity. Connect the wires to your switches or outlets, ensuring proper polarity: black to gold, white to silver, and green or bare copper to the green ground screw. Tighten all terminals securely and fasten the device into the box.
