How to Safely Clean Up Mouse Droppings
Droppings found in a basement or crawl space are more than just a nuisance; they are a sign of a health risk that requires a disciplined approach to cleanup. Because dried rodent waste can carry pathogens that become airborne when disturbed, you must prioritize containment and personal protection over speed. Rushing this process with a vacuum or a broom is the primary way homeowners inadvertently spread contaminants throughout their living space. Done well, the cleanup process is methodical and utilizes chemical neutralization to lock down bacteria before anything is physically removed. You aren't just tidying a mess; you are sanitizing a space to reset the environment. Wear the right gear, keep the waste wet, and ensure you finish by laundering any contaminated fabrics or surfaces to ensure the threat is fully eradicated.
- Lock Down the Space. Close off the room you are cleaning to keep dust from drifting to other areas. Open any available basement windows or vents to ensure maximum airflow during the process.
- Suit Up for Protection. Put on a pair of rubber or nitrile gloves and an N95 respirator mask. Do not skip the mask, as it is your primary defense against inhaling fine, potentially contaminated dust particles.
- Soak and Neutralize. Mix a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water in a spray bottle. Thoroughly soak the droppings and the surrounding area with the solution, ensuring everything is damp before you begin moving debris.
- Lift and Bag Safely. Use paper towels to pick up the damp droppings and debris. If you are cleaning a floor, use a plastic putty knife or a disposable spatula to scoop the material into a sealable plastic bag.
- Finish the Disinfection. Once the physical waste is removed, spray the entire affected area with your bleach solution again. Wipe it clean with fresh paper towels or a disposable cloth.
- Secure and Dispose. Place all paper towels, cleaning cloths, and used gloves into a heavy-duty plastic trash bag. Seal the bag tightly, double-bag it, and place it directly into your outdoor trash bin.
