How to Clean Bathroom Mirrors and Fixtures Without Streaks

Mirrors and chrome fixtures act as the focal points of any bathroom, but they are unforgiving surfaces that reveal every missed stroke. Streaks are rarely caused by the product itself; instead, they are usually the result of residue buildup from previous cleaners or using the wrong type of cloth. Achieving a crystal-clear finish requires stripping away the accumulated soap scum and toothpaste splatter without leaving behind lint or chemical films. Done well, your bathroom should shine with a clarity that makes the space feel larger and cleaner. This method focuses on mechanical removal of grime followed by a light buffing, which keeps your surfaces streak-free for longer. By avoiding heavy detergents, you also protect the delicate finishes on your faucets and handles from long-term pitting or dullness.

  1. Dust Before You Wet. Remove all items from your countertops and clear the area around the mirror. Use a dry, soft brush or a microfiber cloth to dust the mirror and fixtures, ensuring you remove loose hair, lint, and dry toothpaste before introducing liquid.
  2. Make Your Streak-Fighter. Combine one part distilled white vinegar with one part distilled water in a clean spray bottle. Distilled water is critical because the minerals in tap water are the primary culprits behind stubborn water spots.
  3. Attack the Hardware First. Spray the vinegar solution onto a microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the fixtures to prevent liquid from seeping into base seals. Wipe down faucets and handles, using a soft toothbrush to reach the crevices where the handle meets the base.
  4. Light Mist, Swift Strokes. Spray your mirror sparingly, starting from the top left corner and moving in an S-pattern across the glass. Work quickly so the solution does not evaporate before you have a chance to wipe it off.
  5. Polish to Glass-Bright. Immediately follow the wet wipe with a second, dry microfiber cloth. Use circular motions to polish the glass and metal surfaces, focusing on removing any remaining moisture.
  6. Catch the Halos. Step back and view the mirror and fixtures from an angle. Use a clean, dry corner of your cloth to buff out any remaining halos or smudge marks you missed on the first pass.
