How to Clean a Toilet Tank

Clean your toilet tank by turning off water, draining it, scrubbing with disinfectant, and flushing to refill for better performance and hygiene.

  1. Stop the Water Supply. Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet near the floor and turn it clockwise until tight. This stops water from entering the tank while you work.
  2. Set Aside the Tank Lid. Lift the heavy ceramic lid straight up with both hands. Set it on a towel on the floor or counter where it won't get damaged. These lids break easily, so handle with care.
  3. Empty the Tank Fully. Press the flush handle to empty most of the water from the tank. The tank won't refill since you turned off the water supply. Use a sponge or towel to soak up any remaining water in the bottom.
  4. Dissolve Mineral Deposits. Spray the entire inside of the tank with white vinegar or a bathroom cleaner. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to dissolve mineral deposits and stains. For stubborn buildup, scrub with a pumice stone designed for porcelain.
  5. Scrub Tank Mechanisms. Scrub the flapper, chain, fill valve, and flush valve with an old toothbrush dipped in cleaning solution. These parts collect bacteria and mineral deposits that affect flushing performance. Wipe down all surfaces inside the tank.
  6. Restore Water Flow. Turn the water supply back on by turning the valve counterclockwise. Let the tank fill completely, then flush once to rinse away cleaning residue. Replace the tank lid carefully, ensuring it sits evenly.
