How to Re-grout Bathroom Tile
Remove old grout with a grout removal tool, clean the joints thoroughly, apply new grout diagonally across tiles, and seal after 24-72 hours for a fresh, watertight finish.
- Strip Away the Old Grout. Use a manual grout removal tool or oscillating multi-tool to scrape out the old grout from between tiles. Work carefully to avoid chipping the tile edges. Remove grout to a depth of at least two-thirds of the tile thickness. Vacuum out all loose debris and wipe down the area with a damp cloth.
- Clear Every Crevice. Thoroughly clean the grout joints with a small brush and mild cleaner to remove any remaining grout residue, soap scum, or mildew. Allow the area to dry completely before proceeding. If you find any loose tiles, re-secure them with tile adhesive and let cure according to manufacturer instructions.
- Get the Consistency Right. Prepare only the amount of grout you can use in 30 minutes. For sanded grout, mix with water until it reaches a peanut butter consistency. For unsanded grout, aim for a slightly thinner consistency. Let the mixed grout sit for 10 minutes, then stir again without adding more water.
- Pack the Joints Tight. Using a rubber grout float, spread grout diagonally across the tiles, pressing firmly to pack the joints completely. Work in small sections of about 3 square feet at a time. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and use sweeping motions to avoid pulling grout out of the joints.
- Wipe Without Disrupting. Wait 15-20 minutes for the grout to begin setting, then use a damp sponge to gently wipe diagonally across the tiles to remove excess grout from the surface. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water. Avoid wiping directly along the grout lines, which can pull grout out of the joints.
- Seal and Protect. After the grout has cured for 24 hours, clean any remaining haze from the tile surface with a clean, dry cloth. Allow the grout to cure completely for 24-72 hours before exposing to moisture. Apply grout sealer according to manufacturer instructions for maximum protection against water and stains.
