How to Remove Hard Water Stains from a Toilet Bowl

Remove hard water stains using white vinegar, baking soda, or pumice stone by applying the cleaner, letting it sit, then scrubbing with a toilet brush.

  1. Drain and Expose the Stains. Shut off the water supply valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the bowl as much as possible. Use a plunger to push remaining water down the drain, exposing the stained areas for better cleaning access.
  2. Saturate with Acid Solution. Pour undiluted white vinegar directly onto the hard water stains, making sure to coat all affected areas thoroughly. For stubborn stains above the waterline, soak paper towels in vinegar and press them against the stains. Let the vinegar sit for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Let Fizz Do the Work. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the vinegar-treated areas. The combination will fizz and bubble, which helps break down mineral deposits. Let this mixture work for another 15-20 minutes to maximize the chemical reaction.
  4. Attack Mineral Deposits Aggressively. Use a stiff toilet brush to scrub the stained areas vigorously. Focus on the worst spots and use circular motions to work the cleaning mixture into the mineral buildup. The abrasive action combined with the acid will dissolve most stains.
  5. Finish with Gentle Abrasion. For persistent stains that resist the vinegar treatment, gently rub a wet pumice stone directly on the mineral deposits. Keep both the stone and porcelain wet to prevent scratching. Apply light pressure and work in small circular motions until the stains disappear.
  6. Flush and Verify Success. Turn the water supply back on and flush the toilet to rinse away all cleaning residue. Check for any remaining stains and repeat the process on stubborn spots if necessary. The bowl should now be free of hard water mineral buildup.
