How to Remove Stubborn Stains from Your Wood Deck

Stains on a deck are rarely just surface dirt; they are usually a combination of mildew, tannins, and oxidized wood fibers that have bonded with the grain. If your deck has lost its luster and is sporting dark, splotchy patches, a simple rinse won't cut it. You need a chemical cleaner that can break down these organic bonds without damaging the wood's structural integrity or forcing you to sand the entire surface down to raw timber. Done well, a deep clean restores the uniform color of your wood and preps it perfectly for a new coat of sealer. The goal is to lift the grime out of the microscopic pores of the wood rather than just pushing it deeper. By working in manageable sections and being patient with the dwell time of your cleaning agent, you can transform a tired, neglected deck into a vibrant outdoor space in a single afternoon.

  1. Bare the Wood First. Remove all furniture, planters, and debris from the deck surface. Sweep thoroughly to clear away loose leaves and dirt that could create mud when you add water.
  2. Blend Your Weapon. Mix a powdered oxygen bleach cleaner with warm water in a plastic bucket according to the manufacturer's ratio. Ensure the powder is completely dissolved before starting application.
  3. Saturate the Surface. Use a pump sprayer or a stiff-bristled nylon brush to apply the solution liberally across the deck surface. Focus on the most heavily stained areas first.
  4. Let Chemistry Work. Allow the solution to sit on the wood for 15 to 20 minutes, keeping the surface damp by misting it with a little extra water if it begins to dry. This dwell time is essential for the chemicals to lift the deep-set stains.
  5. Attack With Purpose. Scrub the wood boards lengthwise with a stiff-bristled synthetic deck brush. Use firm, rhythmic strokes to work the cleaner deep into the wood grain.
  6. Flush Away Everything. Rinse the entire deck with a garden hose using a spray nozzle on the 'fan' setting. Ensure all cleaning residue and lifted grime are washed away completely.
