How to Deep Clean Outdoor Cushions and Patio Furniture

Cushions endure a relentless cycle of UV rays, humidity, and airborne grit, which eventually embeds dirt deep into the weave of the fabric. Leaving this grime unchecked causes mold and mildew to take hold, effectively eating away at the integrity of the textile fibers. A proper cleaning isn't just about appearances; it is about extending the lifespan of your investment so you aren't replacing expensive upholstery every two seasons. Done well, your furniture should look crisp, smell neutral, and show no signs of residue. Avoid the trap of using a high-pressure power washer on fabric, as this can shred the seams and break down the internal water-resistant coatings. Instead, focus on a methodical approach of agitation and rinsing to lift stubborn stains without damaging the structural weave of the cushion covers.

  1. Remove Loose Debris First. Use a soft-bristled brush or a handheld vacuum to remove loose dust, cobwebs, and dried leaf matter. Work in sections to ensure you are getting into the seams and piping where particles like to accumulate.
  2. Mix Your Cleaning Elixir. Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with one gallon of lukewarm water in a large bucket. Stir until the mixture is slightly sudsy, but avoid over-soaping the water, as excess soap is notoriously difficult to rinse out.
  3. Work Suds Into Stains. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the solution and work the suds into the fabric using gentle circular motions. Focus specifically on darkened areas or spots where water tends to pool.
  4. Banish Every Last Bubble. Use a garden hose on a gentle setting to rinse away all soapy residue. Start at the top of the cushion and work your way down until the water running off the bottom is completely clear.
  5. Polish the Frames Clean. Clean metal or resin frames with a damp microfiber cloth and the same soap solution used for the cushions. Rinse with a separate wet cloth to remove any film, then dry with a clean towel to prevent water spots.
  6. Dry Fully Before Use. Prop your cushions upright in a shaded, well-ventilated area to allow air to circulate through both sides. Do not place them back on the frames until they are 100% dry to prevent mold growth.
