How to Deep Clean a Gas Grill

A pristine grill is the difference between a charred, uneven mess and a perfect sear. Over time, grease, carbonized food, and rust build up on your burner ports and firebox, creating cold spots and risking flare-ups that can ruin your dinner. Cleaning your grill isn't just about aesthetics; it is about reclaiming the heating efficiency you paid for when you bought the unit. To do this well, you need to go past the wire brush. You are aiming for a clean firebox where nothing but the burners remains, allowing you to scrape away years of buildup. Once the airflow is restored and the burner ports are clear, your grill will perform like it did on day one, maintaining consistent temperatures without the fear of internal grease fires.

  1. Kill the Gas First. Disconnect the propane tank or turn off the natural gas supply line completely. Remove the cooking grates, heat deflectors, and the grease tray to expose the burner tubes.
  2. Unblock Every Port. Inspect the burner tubes for clogs or spider webs. Use a pipe cleaner or a small wire brush to gently clean the burner ports, ensuring no debris is pushed back into the tube.
  3. Scrape Years of Buildup. Use a plastic putty knife to scrape the heavy, baked-on grease from the bottom and sides of the firebox. Do not use metal scrapers, as they can damage the enamel coating.
  4. Restore the Grates. If your grates are cast iron, scrub them with hot, soapy water and a stiff brush, then dry immediately to prevent rust. For stainless steel, soak them in a bucket of warm degreaser and scrub with a stainless steel scouring pad.
  5. Shine the Outside. Wipe down the lid and side tables with a damp microfiber cloth and a mild soap solution. For stainless steel exteriors, use a dedicated stainless cleaner to remove fingerprints and water spots.
  6. Burn Off the Residue. Replace the heat deflectors, burners, and grates exactly as they were. Reconnect the gas, light the grill, and run it on high for 15 minutes to burn off any residual cleaning chemicals.
