Restoring a Weathered Cedar Deck

Cedar, when left to the elements, inevitably succumbs to the silver-gray patina caused by UV degradation and moisture. While many see this as character, the gray layer is actually dead wood fibers that prevent stains and sealers from penetrating properly. Removing this layer is the difference between a finish that peels after a season and one that protects your deck for years. Restoring cedar isn't just about appearance; it is about stabilizing the wood's surface. Done well, you will strip away the gray, neutralize the chemical cleaners, and rehydrate the wood with oil that mimics its natural resins. The goal is to see the warm, reddish-brown grain return before you apply your final coat of protection.

  1. Clear the deck first. Remove all furniture, planters, and debris from the deck surface. Use a stiff-bristled broom to clear away loose dirt and organic matter from between the boards.
  2. Soak away the patina. Mix an oxygen-based wood cleaner according to the manufacturer's instructions in a plastic bucket. Apply the solution generously using a pump sprayer and let it dwell for 15 minutes, ensuring the surface stays wet.
  3. Scrub with the grain. Use a medium-bristle synthetic deck brush to scrub the wood in the direction of the grain. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose using a fan-spray nozzle until no soap residue remains.
  4. Smooth the wood fibers. Once the deck is bone dry, use a random orbital sander with 60 to 80-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining gray fuzz or splintered wood. Focus on high-traffic areas where the grain is most compromised.
  5. Restore cedar's warm tone. Apply a citric or oxalic acid-based wood brightener to the deck to restore the natural pH balance of the cedar. This step pulls out tannins and brightens the wood fibers before staining.
  6. Lock in protection now. Apply a penetrating oil-based stain using a staining pad or brush, working one board at a time to avoid lap marks. Wipe away any excess oil that hasn't soaked in after 15 minutes to prevent sticky spots.
