How to Properly Stain and Seal Your Wood Deck

Done well, the job is repetitive but straightforward. The secret isn't the skill of the brushwork, but the quality of the preparation. If you skip cleaning or fail to let the wood dry properly, your hard work will peel before the first frost arrives.   1. Clear the Stage First. Remove all furniture, planters, and debris from the deck. Sweep the surface thoroughly to remove loose dirt, leaves, and cobwebs that could get trapped under the stain.
  2. Scrub Away Years of Grime. Apply a dedicated deck cleaner to the wood using a pump sprayer. Scrub the boards with a stiff-bristle brush to lift embedded dirt, then rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.
