How to Weatherstrip a Door
Weatherstripping a door involves measuring the door frame, cleaning the surfaces, and installing foam, rubber, or vinyl strips along the top, sides, and bottom to seal gaps and prevent drafts.
- Measure Before You Buy. Use a tape measure to determine the length needed for each side of the door frame. Measure the top horizontal piece and both vertical sides separately. Add a few extra inches to each measurement to account for trimming and overlap.
- Pick the Right Material. Select from foam tape, rubber strips, or vinyl weatherstripping based on your door type and gap size. Foam tape works well for small gaps and is easiest to install. Rubber strips provide better durability for frequently used doors. Vinyl offers the best longevity but requires more precise installation.
- Start with a Clean Surface. Remove any old weatherstripping remnants, dirt, or debris from the door frame surfaces where you'll apply the new material. Use a putty knife to scrape off stubborn adhesive residue, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Let the surface dry completely before proceeding.
- Seal the Top First. Start with the top horizontal piece of the door frame. Peel back a small section of the adhesive backing and position the weatherstripping so it will compress against the door when closed. Press firmly and gradually remove more backing as you work across the entire top, ensuring the strip stays straight and even.
- Secure Both Sides Evenly. Install weatherstripping on both vertical sides of the door frame, starting from the top and working down. Make sure the material aligns properly with the top piece and doesn't create gaps at the corners. Cut the strips to length, leaving slight overlap at the bottom that you can trim later.
- Block Drafts at the Bottom. Address the bottom gap with either a door sweep attached to the door bottom or threshold weatherstripping on the floor. For a door sweep, measure the door width, cut the sweep to size, and screw it to the bottom of the door so the flexible strip just touches the threshold. For threshold strips, clean the area and press the adhesive strip firmly into place.
- Verify Smooth Operation. Close the door and check that it seals properly around all edges without binding. The weatherstripping should compress slightly but not prevent the door from closing completely. Trim any excess material with scissors or a utility knife, and adjust positioning if needed to eliminate gaps while maintaining smooth door operation.
