How to Clean and Seal a Concrete Driveway

Clean your concrete driveway with a pressure washer and degreaser, let it dry completely, then apply concrete sealer with a roller or sprayer for protection against weather and stains.

  1. Clear Everything Off First. Remove all vehicles, outdoor furniture, and debris from the driveway. Sweep thoroughly to eliminate loose dirt and leaves. Pull any weeds growing in cracks and scrape off stuck-on materials like gum or tar using a putty knife.
  2. Attack Oil and Grease. Spray concrete degreaser directly onto oil stains, grease spots, and heavily soiled areas. Let the degreaser sit for 10-15 minutes to break down the stains. For stubborn stains, scrub with a stiff brush before moving to the next step.
  3. Blast Away the Grime. Using a pressure washer with at least 3000 PSI, start at the highest point of the driveway and work downward. Hold the nozzle 6-8 inches from the surface and use overlapping strokes. Pay extra attention to stained areas and expansion joints where dirt accumulates.
  4. Patience Protects Your Work. Let the driveway dry completely for at least 24 hours before sealing. The concrete must be bone dry for the sealer to penetrate properly. Avoid sealing if rain is expected within 24 hours of application.
  5. Coat in Thin, Even Strokes. Pour sealer into a paint tray and use a 3/8-inch nap roller to apply it in thin, even coats. Work in 4-foot sections, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks. For large driveways, consider using a pump sprayer followed by back-rolling for even coverage.
  6. Second Coat for Coverage. If the first coat soaks in quickly or coverage appears uneven, apply a second thin coat after the first has dried but is still slightly tacky, typically 2-4 hours later. Avoid puddling or over-application which can create a cloudy appearance.
