How to Clean a Chimney Safely
Clean your chimney from the top down using proper safety equipment, brushes, and drop cloths, or hire a professional for complex cleaning jobs.
- Gear Up Before You Climb. Check your roof condition and weather before starting. Gather a sturdy ladder, safety harness, non-slip shoes, dust mask, safety goggles, and gloves. Never attempt chimney cleaning in wet, windy, or icy conditions.
- Contain the Mess First. Lay drop cloths around the fireplace area inside your home. Seal the fireplace opening with plastic sheeting and tape to prevent soot from entering your house. Remove the damper handle if possible for easier access.
- Reach the Top Safely. Use a sturdy extension ladder and have someone spot you. Wear your safety harness and attach it to a secure anchor point. Remove the chimney cap and spark arrestor screen carefully, noting how they fit together for reassembly.
- Know What You're Dealing With. Use a flashlight to look down the flue. Check for obstructions, damage, or excessive creosote buildup. If you see structural damage or more than 1/8 inch of creosote buildup, stop and call a professional.
- Start the Scrubbing Motion. Attach the chimney brush to your first rod section. Lower the brush into the flue and use firm up-and-down strokes. Add rod sections as you work deeper. The goal is to scrub the walls thoroughly while working downward.
- Push Through the Full Length. Work systematically down the entire length of the flue. Pay extra attention to bends or offsets where creosote tends to accumulate. Use a stiff wire brush for stubborn deposits, but avoid aggressive scraping that could damage the flue liner.
- Vacuum Every Last Particle. After finishing the top-down cleaning, go inside and carefully remove the plastic sheeting from the fireplace. Use a shop vacuum to remove all debris from the firebox and smoke chamber. Wipe down all surfaces.
- Verify Everything Works Again. Check the damper operation and clean around the damper area. Reinstall the spark arrestor screen and chimney cap, ensuring all fasteners are secure. Remove all drop cloths and clean your tools thoroughly.
