How to Clean Air Ducts in Your Home

Clean air ducts by turning off HVAC, removing vent covers, vacuuming accessible areas with a shop vac, and wiping down surfaces with damp cloths.

  1. Kill the Power First. Switch off your heating and cooling system at the thermostat and the main power switch. This prevents debris from circulating while you work and keeps you safe from moving parts.
  2. Access All Registers. Unscrew the vent covers from walls, floors, and ceilings using a screwdriver. Place screws in a small bowl so you don't lose them. Set covers aside for separate cleaning.
  3. Scrub the Visible Dust. Wash removable covers with warm soapy water in your sink or bathtub. For stubborn buildup, use an old toothbrush to scrub the slats. Rinse thoroughly and let them air dry completely.
  4. Suction Out the Debris. Use a shop vacuum with a long hose attachment to reach into the ducts as far as possible. Work systematically from room to room, vacuuming both supply and return ducts. Don't force the hose if you meet resistance.
  5. Grab the Stubborn Dust. Dampen microfiber cloths with water and reach into the ducts to wipe down the first few feet of accessible surfaces. Focus on removing dust, pet hair, and visible debris from the duct walls.
  6. Target the Return Duct. Locate your main return duct, usually near your furnace or air handler. This area typically has the heaviest buildup. Vacuum thoroughly and wipe down all accessible surfaces.
  7. Install Fresh Protection. Install a new, high-quality air filter in your HVAC system. A clean filter prevents debris from re-entering your freshly cleaned ducts and improves air quality.
  8. Seal It Back Up. Once everything is dry, screw the vent covers back into place. Make sure they're properly aligned and securely fastened. Turn your HVAC system back on and test airflow at each vent.
