How to Clean a Microwave—The Right Way

Microwaves accumulate splatter, burnt-on food, and general gunk faster than any other kitchen appliance. The inside becomes a hidden disaster—visible enough to be gross, easy enough to ignore until the smell gets bad. The good news is that cleaning one takes 15 minutes and requires almost nothing. The steam method works because heat and moisture soften dried food, turning scrubbing from a battle into a quick wipe-down. Done right, your microwave interior goes from crusted to spotless, and you'll actually want to look inside it again.

  1. Clear and Survey the Cavity. Remove the turntable and any items inside. Look at the ceiling, walls, and floor of the cavity. If there are thick, burnt-on spots or significant splatters, note their location—you'll focus extra effort there. A quick inspection tells you whether you're dealing with routine maintenance or a deeper cleaning job.
  2. Mix the Cleaning Solution. Pour one cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup. Add one cup of white vinegar and stir. The vinegar isn't just for smell—it cuts through grease and helps soften baked-on food better than water alone.
  3. Generate the Loosening Steam. Place the bowl in the center of the microwave cavity. Close the door and set the timer for 5 minutes on high power. The water will heat and create thick steam that fills the entire space. You'll see condensation build up on the walls and ceiling—that's exactly what you want. The heat softens all the stuck food without you having to scrub.
  4. Let Heat Do the Work. When the microwave beeps, don't open it immediately. Leave the door closed for another 2 minutes. The residual heat and steam continue to penetrate the grime, making it easier to remove. This waiting period is where the real work happens.
  5. Extract the Hot Bowl Carefully. Open the microwave door slowly—steam will release, so give your face some distance. Using heat-safe gloves or a kitchen towel, remove the hot bowl and place it on the counter. Set it somewhere it won't tip. Be careful; the bowl and liquid are very hot.
  6. Start from the Top Down. Use a damp cloth or sponge to start wiping down the ceiling of the microwave cavity. Most food splatters land here, and the steam will have softened them significantly. Wipe in circular motions, working from the back toward the front. Don't press hard—the softened food should come away easily. If it doesn't budge, leave it for the next pass.
  7. Work Walls and Glass Clean. Move to the side walls, working methodically from top to bottom. Wipe the interior of the door last, since grime often collects on the glass where you can see it most clearly. Use the same damp cloth. If areas still feel sticky or have visible spots, make a second pass with a fresh cloth.
  8. Paste Out Stubborn Spots. If any food is still stuck after the steam and wipe, make a paste of baking soda and water (roughly 3 parts soda to 1 part water). Apply this paste directly to the problem spot and let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Use a soft sponge or non-scratch scrubber to gently work the paste over the stuck food. The mild abrasive will lift it without scratching the microwave interior.
  9. Restore and Replace the Glass. Rinse the turntable under warm water and wash it with dish soap and a sponge. Dry it completely. If there are stubborn spots on the glass, use a paste of baking soda and water, then rinse and dry. Place the clean turntable back in the microwave, making sure it sits flat and spins freely.
  10. Finish Fresh and Dry. Do one final pass with a clean, damp cloth to remove any traces of baking soda residue or vinegar smell. Pay attention to seams and the area where the door closes. Make sure the microwave interior is completely dry before use. Open the door and look inside—it should be clean and smell neutral, not sour.
