How to Remove Grease and Buildup from Stovetop Burners and Grates
Grease doesn't just sit on your stovetop—it accumulates in layers, hardens into stubborn film, and makes your kitchen look neglected even when you're cleaning regularly. The good news is that buildup on burners and grates responds well to the right approach: patience, the right cleaner, and a little elbow work. This guide walks you through breaking down grease without scratching finishes or damaging heating elements. The payoff is a stovetop that looks clean and cooks evenly, because grease buildup actually interferes with heat distribution and makes burners work harder than they need to.
- Free the Grates First. Lift grates straight up and away from the stovetop. If your stove has removable burner caps (the flat ceramic or metal covers), twist them counterclockwise or lift them straight up, depending on your model. Set them on a clear workspace. Do not force any part; if something doesn't lift easily, check your stove manual—some caps are push-fit, others screw in.
- Make Your Grease Fighter. Fill a large sink, utility tub, or even your bathtub with water as hot as you can handle—around 120–130°F. Add a heavy-duty degreaser (liquid dish soap works for light buildup; use a commercial degreaser like Dawn Powerwash or equivalent for heavy accumulation). Use about 2 tablespoons of degreaser per gallon of water. Stir the water to distribute the degreaser evenly.
- Let Chemistry Do the Work. Carefully place all grates and burner caps into the hot soapy water. Make sure they're fully submerged. If they float or don't stay under, weight them down with a heavy plate or bowl turned upside down. Leave them to soak for 15–30 minutes. Don't walk away completely; check after 15 minutes to see if buildup is beginning to soften.
- Coax the Grease Away. Remove one grate or cap from the water and place it on a work surface. Using a soft-bristled brush, bottle brush, or non-abrasive sponge, scrub the surface in the direction of any grooves or ridges. Pay attention to corners and crevices where grease pools. Don't use steel wool on non-cast surfaces—it scratches. If buildup resists, return the piece to hot water for another 10 minutes and try again.
- Wash Away Every Trace. Hold each cleaned grate or cap under hot running water and rinse away all soap residue and loosened grease. Rotate and tilt the piece so water flows through all crevices. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear and there's no slick feel to the surface.
- Seal in the Clean. Dry each piece thoroughly with a clean cloth or paper towels immediately after rinsing. Don't let them air-dry, especially if they're cast iron—moisture left behind causes rust. Wipe down every surface, including the underside and any grooves.
- Attack the Surface Now. While grates are soaking, wipe down the exposed stovetop surface. Mix a small bowl of hot water with a tablespoon of degreaser. Dip a cloth or sponge and wipe the flat areas around the burners. For stubborn spots, let the cloth sit on the grease for 30 seconds to soften it, then wipe. Rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry with a paper towel.
- Tackle Stubborn Spots. If you have spots of baked-on, darkened grease that won't budge after soaking, make a paste of baking soda and water (about 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water). Apply the paste directly to the problem area on either the grates, burner caps, or stovetop surface. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush. Rinse and dry.
- Lock Everything Back. Once everything is completely dry, place grates back onto the stovetop, aligning them with the burner wells. Press down firmly until they sit flat. For burner caps, align the center hole with the burner stem and either push down or twist clockwise until snug, depending on your model. Make sure nothing rocks or sits unevenly.
- Finish with Polish. Use a damp cloth to wipe the areas around your stovetop where water may have splashed during cleaning. Dry with a paper towel. Check the stovetop surface one more time for streaks or residue and buff if needed.
