How to Clean and Maintain a Glass Cooktop

Glass cooktops look clean, cook efficiently, and dominate modern kitchens—but they're also unforgiving surfaces that show every fingerprint, spill, and smudge. The flat design means spills don't drip into crevices like traditional coil burners, which is the upside. The downside is that any burnt-on food or mineral deposit sits right there visible and can actually damage the glass if left too long or cleaned wrong. The difference between a cooktop that looks new after two years and one that looks cloudy and scratched comes down to consistent, gentle cleaning and understanding what your glass surface actually needs. This isn't complicated, but it does require the right tools and a little discipline about timing.

  1. Let the Glass Warm. Switch off all burners and wait 2-3 minutes until the surface is warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn you. The glass should still be warm—this helps loosen burnt-on food and allows cleaner to work more effectively. Never clean a cold or actively heating cooktop.
  2. Brush Away Loose Debris. Use a soft brush or dry cloth to wipe away any loose crumbs, dust, or food particles from the surface. This prevents you from dragging debris across the glass with your scraper or cleaner, which can scratch it. Work from the center outward toward the edges.
  3. Target Burnt Spots. Spray or pour a small amount of glass cooktop cleaner directly onto any burnt spots or stained areas. Do not spray the entire surface at once; you'll use more product than necessary. Focus on visible spills, discoloration, or buildup. Let the cleaner sit for 30 seconds to 1 minute to soften burnt-on material.
  4. Angle & Scrape. Hold a flat-edge razor scraper (not a knife) at a 45-degree angle to the glass. Apply gentle, steady pressure and scrape away the loosened food. Work in the direction of the burnt spot, not against it, using the full length of the blade rather than short jabbing motions. Re-apply cleaner if the spot resists.
  5. Remove All Residue. Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth (not paper towels) to wipe the entire cooktop surface, removing all cleaner residue and loosened debris. Work in circular motions or straight lines—whatever feels natural. Make sure no product pools or dries in streaks. If you see streaks, wipe again with a barely damp cloth and then a dry one.
  6. Dry to Perfection. Go over the entire cooktop one more time with a dry microfiber cloth or lint-free paper towel to remove all moisture. Water spots and streaks appear quickly on glass cooktops, so thorough drying is part of the cleaning process, not optional. Pay attention to the edges and the area around burner controls.
  7. Paste Stubborn Spots. If a spot remains after basic cleaning, make a paste of baking soda and water (or cooktop cleaner and baking soda) and apply it directly to the burnt area. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then gently scrape with your razor scraper at a 45-degree angle. This creates a mild abrasive that softens the bond without scratching. Wipe and dry as above.
  8. Clean the Frame. Dampen a cloth with cooktop cleaner or a diluted vinegar-water solution and wipe the stainless steel or painted frame, knobs, and control areas. Do not let liquid run down into the control panel. Use a slightly drier cloth or old toothbrush to clean tight spots around knobs. Dry immediately with a microfiber cloth.
  9. Add Protective Shine. Once the glass is completely dry and clean, apply a thin coat of cooktop conditioner or specialized glass cooktop polish according to product instructions. These products create a light protective layer that repels water spots and makes future cleaning easier. Buff with a clean microfiber cloth until no residue remains. Do this weekly or biweekly for best results.
  10. Eliminate Mineral Haze. If you see a whitish, cloudy haze that doesn't wipe away with standard cleaner, you have mineral deposits from hard water or steam. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, spray lightly, let sit for 2-3 minutes, and wipe with a damp cloth. For heavier deposits, use the baking soda paste method above. Dry thoroughly.
  11. Lift, Don't Drag. Use cookware with flat, clean bottoms. Rough or warped bottoms can drag debris across the glass and cause scratching. Lift pans rather than sliding them across the surface. Avoid dropping heavy pans or cookware directly onto the glass—cooktops can crack. Use the right-sized burner for your pan to minimize spill risk.
  12. Go Deep Once Monthly. Once a month, dedicate 15 minutes to a thorough cleaning session. Remove all burner grates or elements if your cooktop allows. Clean the underside of removable parts, the gaps around burners, and any hard-to-reach areas. Use vinegar solution for mineral deposits and a cooktop-specific cleaner for grease. This prevents buildup from becoming permanent.
