How to Clean and Maintain Your Dishwasher Drain and Filter

Your dishwasher's drain and filter are its lungs—they work invisibly, trapping food scraps and grease so your dishes get clean. But when they clog, you get standing water, slow drainage, and a smell that creeps into your whole kitchen. Most people ignore them entirely until something breaks, which is backwards. A fifteen-minute maintenance job every few months prevents the kind of nasty backup that leaves you hand-washing dishes for a week. This guide walks you through what you actually need to do and when.

  1. Find Your Filter First. Open your dishwasher and look at the bottom. Most filters are located in the lower rear corner or center of the tub, usually under a removable cylindrical or basket-style cage. Pull it straight up and out—some twist counterclockwise slightly before lifting. Hold it up to the light. You're looking for visible food debris, grease buildup, or a dull, discolored appearance. If you see heavy gunk, your drain is probably struggling.
  2. Flush Out Trapped Food. Hold the filter under warm running water and use your fingers or a soft brush to loosen trapped debris. Pay attention to the fine mesh screen—food particles like rice, pasta bits, and vegetable skin lodge here. Rub gently across the mesh from both sides. Don't use a harsh scouring pad; you can perforate the screen. If buildup is thick or sticky, soak the filter in hot water for ten minutes first, then brush it again.
  3. Clear Visible Debris. With the filter out, look into the opening at the bottom of the dishwasher tub. You'll see a drain basket or strainer cup around the opening itself. Use your fingers or tweezers to pull out any visible food scraps, bottle caps, or debris lodged near the drain hole. Run your hand around the edges and bottom of this basket to check for sludge or grease coating. This is where bigger pieces get caught before water drains.
  4. Probe the Drain Hole. Look directly down at the drain opening itself—a small hole or grate at the very bottom. Use a flashlight to see if anything is blocking it. If you see debris, use a straightened paperclip or drain cleaning wire to gently probe the opening and dislodge trapped food or grease. Don't force it; you're just breaking up a clog, not reaming the line. For sticky buildup, pour a kettle of hot water down the drain opening to soften it first.
  5. Dissolve Grease Buildup. Now take the filter to your sink and wash it like a plate. Use warm soapy water and a cloth or soft brush. Get the outside perimeter, the mesh, and any crevices where grease collects. If buildup is stubborn, soak it in a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and hot water for fifteen minutes, then brush again. Rinse completely under running water until the water runs clear.
  6. Seat the Filter Firmly. Drop the clean, wet filter back into its opening at the bottom of the dishwasher. Most filters need to be pushed straight down until they seat fully—you'll feel a slight click or resistance. Don't force it sideways or at an angle. If your model has a cylindrical filter, it should sit flush with the tub floor. Twist it slightly clockwise if your model requires it (check your manual if unsure). The filter should feel secure and not wobble.
  7. Dissolve Hidden Grease. Once a month, or whenever you notice slow drainage or a sour smell, run an empty cycle with vinegar. Place a bowl filled with one cup of white vinegar on the top rack (not the detergent dispenser—you want it to pour out mid-cycle). Run your dishwasher on the hottest, longest cycle available. The vinegar dissolves grease, breaks down buildup in the spray arms and drain line, and kills odor-causing bacteria. Don't add detergent or load dishes.
  8. Tighten the Drain Hose. Once every six months, look underneath your dishwasher where the drain hose connects to the sink drain or garbage disposal. The connection should be tight and secure. If your dishwasher is leaking or draining slowly, this connection may have loosened. You should see a hose clamp (metal band with a screw) holding the hose tight. If it's loose, use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the clamp. Don't over-tighten—snug is enough.
  9. Flush the Whole System. Every three months, run your dishwasher's built-in cleaning mode if it has one (check your manual for the button or setting). If there's no cleaning cycle, run the hottest, longest regular cycle with the dishwasher empty and nothing added—just hot water and heat. This flushes the system and helps break down accumulated grease in hard-to-reach places like the spray arm holes and internal drain lines.
  10. Catch Problems Early. Between maintenance sessions, pay attention. Slow drainage or water pooling at the bottom after a cycle means your filter is due for cleaning—don't wait. A sour or sulfurous smell means bacteria are growing in standing water or grease buildup; run a vinegar cycle immediately. If you hear a grinding noise, stop using the dishwasher and inspect the filter—something hard like glass or bone is stuck. These signs are your dishwasher telling you it needs attention.
