How to Deep Clean Your Kitchen Range Hood and Ductwork

Grease is the silent enemy of every kitchen ventilation system. Over time, the vaporized oils from your stovetop travel upward, coating the interior of your hood filters and the walls of the ductwork with a sticky, dust-trapping film. Left untreated, this buildup restricts airflow, forces your motor to work harder, and creates a significant fire hazard in your home. Cleaning the system effectively is less about heavy-duty scrubbing and more about proper chemical management. By breaking down the polymerized grease using the right degreasers, you restore the system to peak performance and keep your kitchen air clean. A well-maintained vent should move air silently and efficiently, without the rattling or wheezing sounds of a clogged system.

  1. Kill the Power First. Turn off the range hood power at the wall switch or circuit breaker. Remove the metal mesh or baffle filters from the underside of the hood, noting their orientation for easy re-installation.
  2. Break Down the Grease. Fill your sink or a plastic basin with very hot water and a high-quality degreasing dish soap. Submerge the filters for at least 20 minutes to let the chemicals break down the heavy oil deposits.
  3. Wipe Every Surface. Spray a heavy-duty degreaser directly onto a microfiber cloth and wipe down the interior and exterior of the range hood housing. Avoid spraying liquids directly into the fan motor assembly.
  4. Expose the Duct. Remove the cover plate or decorative chimney section to expose the start of the ductwork. Use a strong vacuum with a hose attachment to clear loose dust and debris from the first few feet of the pipe.
  5. Reach Deep Into Ductwork. Using a long-handled, soft-bristled brush dampened with degreaser, reach into the duct and wipe the interior walls. Do not use excessive water, as moisture should not accumulate inside the ventilation pipe.
  6. Reassemble and Test. Ensure the filters and the hood interior are completely dry before re-inserting the filters. Once installed, run the fan for 10 minutes to verify smooth operation and verify no rattling sounds occur.
