How to Clean and Maintain Your Kitchen Grease Trap
Grease traps act as the frontline defense for your kitchen plumbing, stopping fats, oils, and greases from turning into rock-hard blockages deep in your pipes. When left unmaintained, these interceptors become a breeding ground for foul odors and a ticking time bomb for a total kitchen sink backup. Maintaining a grease trap is undeniably messy work, but it is the most effective way to prevent a plumbing emergency. Success here means consistent scheduling and a commitment to keeping non-grease waste—like coffee grounds or food scraps—out of your drains entirely. - Cool It Down First. Wait for the grease trap to cool down for several hours before starting. Cleaning a hot trap causes liquefied grease to flow into your pipes, which defeats the entire purpose of the maintenance.
- Access Your Trap. Carefully pry the grease trap lid off using a flat-head screwdriver or a pry bar. Take note of the gasket's condition; if it looks brittle or cracked, have a replacement ready to install.
- Remove Congealed Grease. Use a heavy-duty plastic scoop or a small bucket to remove the top layer of hardened grease and the bottom layer of sediment. Deposit the waste directly into a heavy-duty trash bag.

- Verify Pipes Are Clear. Inspect the inlet and outlet baffles to ensure they are clear of obstructions. Use a plumbing snake if you see evidence of a clog extending into the piping.
- Seal and Test. Clean the edges of the trap where the gasket sits to ensure a tight seal. Replace the lid, ensuring the gasket is seated correctly, and tighten any locking bolts firmly.
