How to Clean and Maintain Natural Stone Countertops

Stone countertops are the silent centerpiece of a kitchen, offering a timeless aesthetic that demands respect for its porous nature. Whether you have marble, granite, or quartzite, these slabs are geological veterans that thrive under consistent, gentle care rather than aggressive chemical treatment. Done well, maintenance involves a simple ritual of daily wiping and a yearly sealing cycle that keeps liquids on the surface where they belong. When you treat the stone as a living surface rather than an indestructible laminate, you prevent the deep-set stains and dull spots that turn a beautiful kitchen into a worn-out one.

  1. Wipe Clean Daily. Mix warm water with a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap in a spray bottle. Wipe the surface using a microfiber cloth to lift debris without scratching the finish.
  2. Clear Everything Off. Remove every appliance, cutting board, and decorative item from the counter. A clean, empty surface is the only way to ensure the sealant is applied evenly.
  3. Deep Clean Stone. Clean the stone thoroughly with a stone-specific cleaner to remove any residual oils or grime. Let the stone dry completely for at least two hours before applying sealer.
  4. Seal the Stone. Spray a thin, even layer of high-quality penetrating stone sealer over the entire surface. Work in small sections, following the manufacturer's dwell time instructions for absorption.
  5. Buff to Perfection. After the dwell time, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to buff the surface in circular motions. Remove all streaks until the stone feels smooth and looks uniform.
  6. Let It Cure. Leave the countertops untouched for at least 6 to 12 hours. Do not place items back on the surface until the sealer has fully cured.
