How to Deep Clean Your Dishwasher

Over time, bits of food, congealed fat, and hard water minerals accumulate in the filter and spray arm holes, leading to cloudy glassware and a lingering musty smell. A deep clean isn't just about sanitation; it's about extending the life of your pump and heating element. By clearing these obstructions, you restore water pressure and ensure your dishes actually emerge clean rather than just rearranged. Spend an hour on this once a quarter to save yourself the cost of a service call.
- Unlock the Debris Trap. Pull out the bottom rack and locate the cylindrical filter assembly at the base. Twist it counter-clockwise to unlock, lift it out, and scrub it under hot running water with a soft-bristled brush to remove trapped debris.
- Unblock Every Nozzle. Detach the lower and upper spray arms. Use a toothpick or a thin needle to poke through each spray nozzle, dislodging any trapped food particles or mineral chunks.
- Attack the Hidden Mold. Wipe the rubber door gaskets with a damp cloth soaked in hot soapy water. Pay close attention to the bottom crease of the door, where mold and gunk love to hide.
- Dissolve Mineral Buildup. Place a dishwasher-safe cup filled with white vinegar on the top rack. Run the empty machine on its hottest, longest cycle to dissolve mineral deposits.
