How to Deep Clean and Deodorize Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are workhorses that often become breeding grounds for food sludge and bacteria. When that familiar, sour funk wafts up from your sink, it is a sign that organic matter has built up on the underside of the rubber splash guard and within the grinding chamber walls. Cleaning the disposal is not just about smell; it is about extending the lifespan of your unit and preventing stubborn clogs. A well-maintained disposal should hum smoothly and run clear, leaving your kitchen smelling neutral rather than like yesterday's lunch.

  1. Cut Power First. Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the disposal unit to ensure there is zero chance of accidental activation. If you have a wall switch, tape it in the off position as an extra layer of safety.
  2. Attack the Hidden Biofilm. Pull the rubber splash guard out of the drain opening, or flip it upward to expose the underside. Use a stiff-bristled scrub brush and dish soap to remove the black, slimy biofilm that clings to the underside and the ridges.
  3. Scrub the Interior Walls. With the splash guard clean, use a long-handled bottle brush to scrub the interior walls of the disposal chamber. You are aiming to dislodge hidden food particles that the grinding blades cannot reach on their own.
  4. Let Ice and Salt Do the Work. Restore power to the unit and turn on the cold water. Pour two cups of ice cubes followed by one cup of rock salt into the disposal and run it until the ice is completely crushed.
  5. Finish With Citrus Fresh. Feed a handful of lemon or lime peels into the running disposal while the cold water continues to flow. The citric acid helps cut through remaining grease while the rinds leave a fresh scent.
  6. Flush Away All Debris. After the peels are fully processed, let the cold water run for an additional 30 seconds to flush all debris completely through the P-trap. Turn off the water and the disposal to finish.
