How to Deep Clean Dirty Grout Lines

Grout is essentially a magnet for grime, holding onto every spill, footprint, and microscopic bit of dust that finds its way onto your kitchen floor. Because it is porous, it doesn't just sit on the surface; it burrows into the material, turning what should be a crisp, clean line into a dull, stained memory of its former self. You don't need expensive equipment to fix this, but you do need patience and the right chemical reaction. Restoring grout is less about brute force and more about giving your cleaning agent enough time to do the heavy lifting. When you let the cleaner penetrate the pores, you dissolve the bonds holding the dirt in place. A job done well results in bright, uniform lines that make your entire kitchen look refreshed without needing a single new tile.

Clear the grout lines first. Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove loose grit and debris. If you try to scrub over loose dirt, you will just turn it into a muddy paste that gets pushed deeper into the grout.
Make your cleaning paste. Combine oxygen-based powdered bleach with just enough water to create a thick, spreadable paste. Aim for the consistency of smooth peanut butter so it doesn't run off the grout lines.
Cover every grout line. Use an old toothbrush or a grout applicator tool to press the paste directly into the grout lines. Ensure every inch of the darkened grout is covered with a visible layer of the mixture.
Let chemistry do the work. Walk away and let the paste sit for at least 30 minutes. If the grout is severely stained, you can leave it for up to an hour, but do not let it dry out completely.
Scrub the stains out. Use a stiff-bristled nylon scrub brush to work the paste back and forth along the grout lines. Apply firm pressure to lift the loosened grime out of the porous texture.
Rinse until spotless. Wipe away the murky residue with a clean, damp microfiber cloth. Rinse the cloth frequently in a bucket of fresh water to ensure you are pulling the dirt away rather than spreading it around.
