Deep Clean the Inside of Your Microwave Without Chemicals
Your microwave works hard, and it shows. Splatters from reheating leftovers, popcorn butter, and tomato sauce accumulate on the ceiling and walls until the whole interior looks like a crime scene. The good news is you don't need commercial degreasers or toxic fumes to get it sparkling again. Steam and common kitchen acids do the heavy lifting—they soften baked-on food, loosen grease, and leave your microwave clean enough to eat from. This method works on every microwave, takes less than 20 minutes total, and uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
- Empty and inspect the microwave. Remove the turntable and set it aside. Wipe away any loose crumbs or debris with a dry cloth or paper towel. Check the interior ceiling, walls, and floor for the worst spots so you know what you're dealing with.
- Prepare the steam solution. Fill a microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup about three-quarters full with water. Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, white vinegar, or a combination of both. Stir to combine. The smell will be sharp but not unpleasant, and it will disappear as it dries.
- Microwave the solution to create steam. Place the bowl in the center of the microwave. Close the door and run it on high power for 5 minutes. You'll hear it bubble and see steam building up inside. Don't open the door during this time—let the steam do the work.
- Let it sit and soften. Once the microwave stops, leave the door closed for 2 to 3 minutes. The steam will continue to penetrate and soften every dried-on particle. This is when the real loosening happens—don't skip it.
- Wipe down the interior walls and ceiling. Carefully open the door (steam is hot). Remove the bowl using an oven mitt or cloth. Take a damp cloth, sponge, or non-abrasive scrubber and wipe the ceiling, walls, and floor in firm but gentle strokes. The grime should come away with minimal effort. Use a second cloth with fresh water to rinse away any residue.
- Clean the turntable and frame. If the turntable has soaked long enough, scrub it under warm running water with a cloth or soft brush. Pay attention to the underside and the support ring. Wipe the door frame, interior edges, and the spot where the turntable sits with your damp cloth.
- Dry and reassemble. Wipe the entire interior with a dry cloth to prevent spotting. Dry the turntable completely and slide it back into place, making sure it sits flat and rotates freely. Wipe the exterior door and frame if needed.
