How to Safely Remove Baked-On Oven Grease

Ovens accumulate carbonized grease that functions like a stubborn adhesive, resistant to standard soapy water and casual wiping. When grease burns repeatedly during cooking cycles, it polymerizes into a hard, dark crust that requires a chemical or mechanical breakdown rather than just surface agitation. Effective cleaning is less about aggressive scrubbing—which risks scratching the oven's enamel lining—and more about controlled chemical dwell time. By using an alkaline paste, you neutralize the acidic components of the burnt fats, lifting the debris away from the metal surface so it can be wiped off with minimal effort. When done well, you regain a clean, reflective interior without relying on harsh caustic fumes or sharp metal scrapers.

  1. Remove Racks and Debris. Remove all oven racks, thermometer probes, and loose food debris using a dry cloth. Do not attempt to clean racks inside the oven; soak them in a separate tub with hot, soapy water.
  2. Mix Your Magic Paste. Combine half a cup of baking soda with three tablespoons of water in a small bowl to form a spreadable, thick consistency. Add a drop of dish soap to increase the paste's ability to cling to vertical surfaces.
  3. Coat Every Greasy Surface. Spread the paste over all greasy surfaces inside the oven, avoiding the heating elements and the glass door seals. Wear rubber gloves to protect your skin as you reach into the corners.
  4. Let Chemistry Do the Work. Close the oven door and leave the paste to sit for at least twelve hours. During this time, the baking soda works to break down the molecular structure of the hardened grease.
  5. Spray and Lift Away Grime. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and mist the dried paste, which will cause it to foam as it reacts. Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away the loosened grease and paste residue.
  6. Polish and Inspect. Inspect the interior for any remaining stubborn spots and buff them with a non-scratch nylon scrub pad. Once clean, wipe the entire interior down one last time with fresh water to remove any lingering residue.
