How to Clean and Re-sand Your Paver Patio
Patios are the foundation of outdoor living, but over time, nature inevitably reclaims the space between your pavers. Moss, weeds, and shifting sand create an uneven, unkempt surface that loses its structural integrity. A clean, well-sanded patio isn't just about curb appeal; it's about preventing water infiltration that can cause your pavers to sink or heave during freeze-thaw cycles. Restoring a patio is a satisfying project that yields immediate results. By removing debris and installing high-quality polymeric sand, you lock the pavers in place, creating a firm, weed-resistant barrier. Done correctly, your patio will look freshly installed and stay stable for years to come. It requires a bit of muscle, but the process is straightforward and foolproof if you respect the drying time.
- Clear Everything Away. Remove all patio furniture, grills, and potted plants from the area. Sweep the entire surface with a stiff-bristle broom to remove loose dirt, leaves, and debris.
- Dig Out the Dead. Use a crack weeding tool or a flat-head screwdriver to scrape out stubborn weeds and old, compacted sand from the joints. If the sand is deep, a pressure washer can help blast out the debris, but be careful not to undermine the base layer.
- Blast the Grime Away. Spray the patio with a specialized paver cleaner or a mixture of water and mild dish soap. Use a pressure washer on a low-to-medium setting to lift stains and grime, working in a sweeping motion to avoid scarring the stone surface.
- Patience Pays Here. Allow the patio to dry for at least 24 hours. The joints must be bone-dry before you apply polymeric sand; if they are damp, the sand will stick to the surface of the pavers and create a permanent, hazy film.
- Fill Every Single Joint. Pour the polymeric sand directly onto the dry pavers. Use a push broom to work the sand into every joint, sweeping diagonally across the pavers to ensure the joints are filled to the bottom.
- Mist to Lock It Down. Use a leaf blower to remove any excess sand residue from the surface of the pavers until they are perfectly clean. Once clear, lightly mist the patio with a garden hose set to a fine 'shower' spray to activate the polymers without washing the sand out of the joints.
