How to Maintain a Wooden Swing Set

Maintain your wooden swing set by inspecting it monthly for damage, cleaning it seasonally, and applying protective stain or sealant annually to prevent rot and ensure safety.

  1. Spot Damage Before It Spreads. Walk around your swing set and check every component. Look for loose bolts, cracked wood, frayed ropes, or worn swing seats. Test each swing by giving it a firm shake. Check that all hardware is tight and that there are no splinters on handholds or seats. Pay special attention to ground contact points where moisture can cause rot.
  2. Wash Away Mildew and Rot. Use a stiff brush and mild soap solution to scrub away dirt, mildew, and debris. Start from the top and work down, paying attention to joints where moisture collects. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose and let dry completely. Remove any leaves or debris from around the base that could trap moisture against the wood.
  3. Smooth Every Touch Point. Use medium-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough areas or splinters that developed since your last maintenance. Focus on high-touch areas like swing seats, handholds, and ladder rungs. Sand with the grain and wipe clean with a tack cloth when finished.
  4. Seal Wood Against Elements. Choose a penetrating wood stain or clear sealant designed for outdoor use. Apply in dry conditions when no rain is expected for 48 hours. Use a brush or roller to coat all exposed wood surfaces, working the finish into joints and crevices. Allow proper drying time between coats if multiple applications are needed.
  5. Upgrade Hardware for Durability. Swap out any rusted bolts, worn washers, or damaged brackets immediately. Use galvanized or stainless steel hardware for replacements. Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to bolt threads before installation to prevent future corrosion. Tighten all connections but avoid over-tightening which can crack the wood.
  6. Protect Posts From Ground Moisture. Keep grass trimmed around the swing set base to promote air circulation. Ensure proper drainage so water doesn't pool around support posts. Consider applying fresh mulch or playground material under swings to prevent soil erosion and provide safer landing surfaces.
