How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for Spring
Preparing your lawn mower for spring involves checking the oil, replacing the air filter, sharpening the blade, and testing the engine to ensure reliable performance for the mowing season.
- Start with Fresh Oil. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level and color. If the oil is black, thick, or below the minimum line, drain it completely and refill with fresh oil according to your mower's specifications. Clean oil protects your engine and ensures smooth operation throughout the season.
- Breathe Easy. Remove the air filter housing and inspect the filter. If it's paper, replace it with a new one. If it's foam, wash it in warm soapy water, let it dry completely, then lightly oil it before reinstalling. A clean air filter improves engine performance and fuel efficiency.
- Sharpen Your Cutting Edge. Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety, then tip the mower to access the blade. Remove the blade and examine it for nicks, chips, or dullness. Sharpen it with a file or grindstone, maintaining the original angle, or take it to a hardware store for professional sharpening. A sharp blade cuts grass cleanly and prevents lawn damage.
- Fire It Up. Remove the old spark plug with a socket wrench and inspect it for wear, corrosion, or carbon buildup. Install a new spark plug, hand-tightening it first, then using the wrench to snug it down. Don't overtighten. A fresh spark plug ensures reliable starting and optimal engine performance.
- Clear Out Winter Fuel. If you left old fuel in the tank over winter, drain it and dispose of it properly. Clean the fuel tank if needed and fill it with fresh gasoline. Check fuel lines for cracks or leaks. Old fuel can clog the carburetor and prevent starting, so always start the season with fresh fuel.
- Confirm Everything Works. Reconnect the spark plug wire and attempt to start the mower. If it doesn't start easily, check that the choke is set properly and the throttle is in the correct position. Prime the engine if your model has a primer bulb. Let the engine warm up and run for several minutes to ensure everything is working smoothly.
