How to Spring Clean Your Entire House in One Weekend

Tackle spring cleaning efficiently by decluttering first, then cleaning room by room with a systematic approach that covers deep cleaning tasks often skipped during regular maintenance.

  1. Gather Your Arsenal First. Gather all cleaning supplies before you start: all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, disinfectant, microfiber cloths, vacuum cleaner, mop, scrub brushes, trash bags, and donation boxes. Having everything ready prevents time-wasting trips to find supplies mid-clean.
  2. Clear the Clutter Fast. Walk through each room with three boxes labeled Keep, Donate, and Trash. Remove items that don't belong in each space and sort everything ruthlessly. This step alone will make the actual cleaning 50% faster and more effective.
  3. Deep Clean the Kitchen. Empty and wipe down all cabinets, clean inside the refrigerator and freezer, scrub the oven and stovetop, descale the coffee maker, and wash the inside of the microwave. Clean the exhaust fan filter and wipe down all small appliances. Finish by mopping the floor with a degreasing solution.
  4. Scrub and Disinfect Bathrooms. Remove everything from counters and shower areas. Spray tile grout with a bleach solution and let it sit while you clean mirrors, countertops, and fixtures. Scrub the toilet inside and out, clean the shower or tub thoroughly, and replace old caulk if needed. Wash bath mats and shower curtains.
  5. Freshen Every Bedroom. Strip beds completely and wash all linens including mattress pads and pillows if possible. Dust all surfaces including baseboards and light fixtures. Vacuum under beds and in corners. Organize closets by removing out-of-season clothing and donating items you haven't worn in a year.
  6. Revive Living Spaces. Move furniture to vacuum underneath and clean baseboards thoroughly. Dust all surfaces including electronics, picture frames, and decorative items. Clean windows inside and out if accessible. Vacuum or wash couch cushions and throw pillows.
  7. Polish the Hidden Details. Clean light switches, door handles, and remote controls with disinfectant. Dust ceiling fans and replace air fresheners. Vacuum air vents and replace HVAC filters. Clean out the dryer vent and lint trap thoroughly. Wipe down garage door tracks and organize storage areas.
  8. Lock In Your Progress. Do a final walkthrough to catch any missed spots. Set up systems to maintain cleanliness like placing baskets for quick tidying and scheduling regular deep cleaning tasks throughout the year. Make beds with fresh linens and add fresh flowers or plants for that finishing touch.
