How to Refresh Your Bathroom Vanity with Paint

Vanities act as the anchor of a bathroom, and when their finish starts to peel, chip, or simply look dated, the entire room feels neglected. You do not need to gut the room or spend thousands on new cabinetry to achieve a high-end transformation. A weekend of diligent preparation and the right paint system can turn a builder-grade eyesore into a custom, modern centerpiece. Success in this project hinges entirely on surface preparation. Because bathrooms deal with constant humidity and cosmetic spills, the paint must bond to the existing finish without compromise. If you take the time to clean away every trace of soap and grease, then sand the surface to create a mechanical bond, the final result will withstand years of daily use.

Strip the Hardware First. Take off the doors, drawers, and all hardware using a screwdriver. Label every hinge and drawer front with painter's tape so you can return them to their original positions without frustration.
Degrease Every Surface. Wipe down all cabinet boxes and doors with a degreaser or a mixture of water and trisodium phosphate (TSP). Removing body oils, hair products, and soap residue is the only way to ensure the primer sticks.
Dull the Glossy Finish. Lightly sand all surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper to dull the existing sheen. Focus on the corners and edges, then wipe away all dust with a tack cloth or a vacuum brush attachment.
Lock In the Bond. Apply a coat of water-based or shellac-based bonding primer using a foam roller for flat surfaces and an angled brush for corners. Allow the primer to dry fully according to the manufacturer's time guidelines.
Apply Smooth Topcoats. Apply your cabinet-grade enamel paint using thin, even layers. Work quickly to maintain a wet edge and avoid over-brushing, which creates visible streaks.
Reassemble with Patience. Wait at least 24 hours after the final coat before reattaching hardware and doors. Exercise caution with the finish for the first week while the paint fully cures.
