How to Choose the Right Lamp for Your Nightstand

Lighting a nightstand is deceptively simple and surprisingly consequential. Most people inherit a lamp, grab whatever's on sale, or live with whatever came with the furniture. The result: a glare trap that wakes you up, a wobbler that feels unstable, or a reading light so dim you strain. A proper nightstand lamp does three things at once—it reads, it soothes, and it doesn't interrupt sleep. The difference between the wrong lamp and the right one is the difference between reaching for your phone at 2 a.m. because you can't sleep, and actually sleeping. This is also where personal habit matters. Some people read in bed for twenty minutes before lights out. Others use the lamp only to navigate at night. Some like pools of focused light. Others want ambient glow. Start there—with how you actually use the space—then work backward to the lamp itself.

  1. Find Your Sight Line. Sit up in bed with your back against the headboard and your head in normal reading position. Have someone measure from the mattress surface to the center of your eyes. This is your baseline. The top of the lampshade should sit just at or slightly below that eye level when the lamp is on the nightstand. Most nightstands are 24–30 inches tall; add the lamp height to this. Aim for the shade top to land somewhere between 42 and 52 inches from the floor. Write this number down.
  2. Diffuse, Don't Glare. Hold a lampshade up to a light source and look through it. If light pours through clearly with barely any visible glow, skip it. You want a shade fabric dense enough that the bulb itself is completely hidden and the light comes through as a soft, even surface glow. Linen, cotton, and parchment paper do this. Translucent plastics and thin papers do too, but they feel cheaper and yellow faster. Avoid bare bulbs, drum shades with thin material, and anything with a glossy interior reflector. The interior of the shade matters as much as the exterior. A white or off-white interior scatters light evenly; a gold or mirrored interior creates hot spots.
  3. Test for Tipping. Set the assembled lamp on a flat surface. Gently push the top of the shade forward and back as if someone reaching over from bed might bump it. The base should not rock or slide. Weight matters: a 5–7 pound base is stable; under 4 pounds and you'll feel nervous about it. If the shade is large or heavy, the base should be weighted and broad, not narrow and tapered. Ceramic, stone, and solid metal bases are heavier than plastic or thin brass. Avoid a base with a footprint smaller than 6 inches in diameter unless it's genuinely heavy.
  4. Verify Bulb Specs. Confirm the lamp accepts standard bulbs (E26 socket in North America). Then determine what wattage you need by looking at how you'll use it. If you read in bed regularly, you want 40–60 watts equivalent (actual LED: 8–12 watts). If it's just for navigation, 25–40 watts is fine. If you like to read and want less eye strain, go to 60–75 watts. Check the lamp's label—it'll say 'Max 60W' or similar. Don't exceed that. The shade fabric type also affects perceived brightness; a dense linen shade with 40 watts can feel dimmer than a thin one with the same bulb. Plan to test this with an actual bulb in your room before committing.
  5. Check Cord & Switch. Measure the distance from where the lamp will sit on the nightstand to the nearest outlet. Most lamp cords are 5–6 feet; if you need more reach, buy an extension cord rather than trying to loop a short cord awkwardly. Examine the switch. It should be on the cord within 12 inches of the base (or a touch lamp), not buried under the shade or hard to find in the dark. Three-way switches are nice but not necessary. A simple on-off toggle or rotary dimmer works fine. Avoid touch lamps with cheap electronics—they fail fast.
  6. Test in Real Light. If possible, borrow the lamp or buy it from a place with a generous return policy. Set it on your nightstand, plug it in, and live with it for 2–3 nights. Turn it on in the evening and notice whether it makes you squint, whether you can read comfortably, whether the color feels warm enough, and whether it affects your ability to sleep. Test it at the brightness you'd actually use—most people set bedside lamps at 30–40% of their full brightness. If you can't test it at home, at least set it up in the showroom in a dimmer corner and view it from bed height, not standing.
  7. Match the Scale. A lamp should look intentional in its space, not like an afterthought or an oversized monument. If your nightstand is small (18 inches wide or less), choose a lamp with a base no wider than 8 inches and a shade diameter of 12 inches or less. If your nightstand is deeper, you can go larger. The overall height (base plus shade) should be roughly equal to the height of any other objects on the nightstand, or just slightly taller. A lamp that's dramatically taller or shorter than everything else looks out of proportion. Walk around the room and view the nightstand from 6 feet away—does the lamp look balanced, or does it dominate or disappear?
  8. Coordinate the Finish. Look at what's already on the nightstand or in the bedroom: doorknobs, cabinet hardware, picture frames, light fixtures. Your lamp base should harmonize with that. Brass with brass, brushed nickel with brushed nickel, bronze with bronze. Mismatched metals look scattered unless you're deliberately mixing—in which case, mix no more than two finishes in one room. Ceramic, wood, and stone bases are finish-neutral and usually safe bets. Avoid bright chrome or shiny brass unless you're restoring a specific era look; they show fingerprints and feel dated.
  9. Plan for Dimming. If you read in bed some nights and want it dark other nights, choose a lamp with either a built-in dimmer switch, a three-way bulb option, or a separate dimmer plug adapter. Smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX) work in any lamp and let you control brightness from your phone, but they're overkill for most people and add cost. A simple mechanical dimmer on the cord is cheap, reliable, and doesn't require batteries or apps. Test the dimmer's feel in the store—some are stiff or finicky.
  10. Choose Efficient Bulbs. LED bulbs are now the default and should cost $3–8 per bulb. They last 15,000+ hours (roughly 10 years at normal bedroom use), stay cool to the touch, and save electricity. Incandescent bulbs are obsolete. Halogen lasts longer but runs hot and is being phased out. CFL (compact fluorescent) is fine but slower to turn on in cold rooms. Stick with warm-white LED, 2700K color temperature. Buy a decent bulb—the $1 bargain bulbs flicker or feel dim. Philips, Cree, and GE make reliable ones that won't drive you crazy.
  11. Position with Intention. Set the lamp slightly back on the nightstand, not right at the edge. This leaves space for a phone, water glass, or book in front of it and keeps the lamp from getting knocked off when you're reaching across. Center it if the nightstand is narrow, or offset it slightly if the nightstand is deep enough for other items. Make sure the shade doesn't touch the wall behind the nightstand—this creates a fire hazard and casts shadows. Leave 2–3 inches clearance. If you have a second lamp on the other nightstand, position both lamps symmetrically so the room feels balanced.
