How to Decorate a Guest Bedroom

Create a welcoming guest bedroom by focusing on comfortable bedding, adequate storage, thoughtful lighting, and personal touches that make visitors feel at home.

  1. Build Comfort from the Ground Up. Choose a mattress that suits most sleep preferences - medium-firm works well for most guests. Invest in quality sheets with a thread count between 200-400, and provide multiple pillow options including firm and soft. Add a lightweight blanket and a heavier comforter so guests can adjust their warmth. Make the bed with hotel-style precision, tucking sheets tightly and fluffing pillows.
  2. Give Guests Room to Settle. Provide a dresser or chest of drawers where guests can unpack clothes. Clear out at least three drawers completely. Add a luggage rack or bench at the foot of the bed for suitcases. Include bedside tables on both sides of the bed with space for personal items. If the room lacks a closet, add a clothing rack or wardrobe with hangers already in place.
  3. Set the Perfect Mood Every Hour. Layer your lighting with overhead illumination, bedside reading lamps, and ambient lighting. Install dimmer switches on overhead lights so guests can adjust brightness. Place table lamps or wall-mounted reading lights beside the bed with easy-to-reach switches. Add a small lamp or nightlight for nighttime navigation. Ensure all light bulbs are working and provide the same warm or cool tone throughout the room.
  4. Create Visual Calm and Welcome. Paint walls in soft, neutral colors like warm white, light gray, or pale blue that appeal to most people. Avoid bold patterns or highly personal artwork that might feel overwhelming. Add texture with throw pillows, a cozy throw blanket, or a simple area rug. Hang one or two pieces of calming artwork or nature photography. Keep decorative items minimal but thoughtful.
  5. Anticipate Every Guest Need. Place a water carafe and glasses on the bedside table. Add a small alarm clock, phone charger, and notepad with pen. Include fresh towels, washcloths, and basic toiletries in an attached bathroom or nearby linen closet. Provide a full-length mirror and adequate electrical outlets. Consider adding a small basket with snacks, travel-sized items, or local information. Ensure the room has good ventilation and temperature control.
  6. Inspect Like a Hotel Manager. Deep clean the room before each guest visit, including dusting all surfaces, vacuuming thoroughly, and washing all linens. Check that all electrical outlets work, WiFi password is available, and window treatments open and close properly. Test the mattress for comfort and support. Remove any personal items or clutter. Stock the room as if it were a boutique hotel - everything should be clean, functional, and ready for immediate use.
