How to Decorate a Master Bedroom
Start with a cohesive color scheme, choose quality bedding as your focal point, add layered lighting, and incorporate personal touches while keeping the space clutter-free for a relaxing retreat.
- Set Your Color Foundation. Pick a main color and two accent colors that create a calming atmosphere. Neutral tones like soft grays, warm whites, or muted blues work well for bedrooms. Use the 60-30-10 rule: 60% main color for walls and large furniture, 30% secondary color for bedding and curtains, and 10% bold accent color for pillows and artwork.
- Anchor the Room Right. Place your bed away from the door but where you can see the entrance. Center it on the longest wall when possible, leaving equal space on both sides for nightstands. Ensure at least 3 feet of walking space around the bed and avoid placing it directly under windows or ceiling fans.
- Build Mood with Light. Install three types of lighting: ambient lighting from overhead fixtures or ceiling fans, task lighting from bedside lamps for reading, and accent lighting like table lamps or wall sconces to create mood. Add dimmer switches to overhead lights so you can adjust brightness throughout the day.
- Make Bedding Count. Invest in comfortable sheets, pillows, and a duvet or comforter that matches your color scheme. Layer different textures with throw pillows and a blanket at the foot of the bed. Choose fabrics that feel good against your skin and are easy to wash and maintain.
- Frame Windows Boldly. Hang curtains or blinds that provide privacy and light control. Mount curtain rods close to the ceiling and extend them beyond the window frame to make windows appear larger. Choose fabrics that complement your bedding and allow you to darken the room for better sleep.
- Organize Without Clutter. Add a dresser, armoire, or built-in closet organization system to keep clothes organized. Use under-bed storage boxes for seasonal items or extra bedding. Include a bench or chair where you can sit to put on shoes or lay out clothes for the next day.
- Inject Your Personality. Hang artwork that you love at eye level, typically 57-60 inches from the floor to the center of the piece. Add plants for natural color and air purification. Display meaningful photos, books, or decorative objects on nightstands and dressers, but keep surfaces mostly clear for a peaceful feeling.
- Ground the Space. Place a large area rug under and extending beyond the bed, or use smaller rugs on each side of the bed. The rug should be large enough that when you step out of bed, your feet land on it. Choose textures and patterns that complement your overall design without overwhelming the space.
