How to Install a Floating Nightstand

Nightstands that hover off the floor transform a bedroom by reclaiming visual space and simplifying floor cleaning. A properly installed floating nightstand isn't just about aesthetics; it is an exercise in physics. If you don't anchor it into the structural members of your wall, it will eventually pull away under the weight of a lamp, a book, or your morning coffee. Done well, the unit should feel like a permanent extension of the wall itself. You are looking for a rock-solid connection that eliminates any wobble or tilt. This guide focuses on the standard cleat-mount method, which offers the best balance of strength and clean lines.

  1. Find Your Wall's Bones. Use a stud finder to identify the centers of at least two wall studs where you want the nightstand. Mark the exact center of each stud with a pencil at the desired height.
  2. Dead-Level the Bracket. Hold the mounting bracket or French cleat against the wall at your marked height. Use a bubble level to ensure the piece is perfectly horizontal, then mark the screw holes through the bracket onto the wall.
  3. Drill Without Splitting. Drill pilot holes into the marked stud locations using a bit slightly smaller than your mounting screws. This prevents the wood studs from splitting when you drive the lag bolts home.
  4. Lock It Down Flush. Drive the mounting screws through the bracket and into the pilot holes. Tighten them until the bracket is flush against the wall, checking the level one last time as you tighten.
  5. Seat the Nightstand. Carefully slide or click the nightstand onto the mounted bracket. Ensure it locks into place or rests fully seated against the wall structure.
  6. Test for Rock-Solid Grip. Apply firm downward pressure to the top of the nightstand to test for any movement or flexing. If it shifts, tighten the mounting screws further or check the bracket connection.
