How to Make a Small Bedroom Feel Bigger

Transform a cramped bedroom into a spacious retreat by using light colors, strategic lighting, and clever furniture placement to create visual depth and maximize floor space.

  1. Paint Light for Expansion. Choose whites, soft grays, or pale pastels for your walls. Light colors reflect more light and create the illusion of expanded space. Avoid dark colors that absorb light and make walls feel closer. Consider painting the ceiling the same color as the walls to eliminate visual boundaries and create a seamless, airy feel.
  2. Flood It With Daylight. Remove heavy curtains and replace them with sheer panels or light-filtering blinds. If privacy allows, leave windows completely uncovered during the day. Clean windows inside and out to let in maximum light. Position mirrors opposite or adjacent to windows to reflect natural light deeper into the room.
  3. Position Your Anchor Right. Select a bed that fits the room proportionally rather than cramming in the largest possible size. Place the bed against the longest wall to create better traffic flow. Consider a platform bed or one with built-in storage to eliminate the need for additional furniture. Avoid placing the bed in the center of the room, which cuts up floor space.
  4. Stack Up, Not Out. Install tall, narrow dressers and bookcases that draw the eye upward. Mount floating shelves on walls instead of using floor-standing units. Choose furniture with legs to create visual space underneath. Hang clothes organizers on the back of doors or in closets to keep floor areas clear.
  5. Clear the Path Through. Keep pathways clear and unobstructed to allow the eye to travel freely through the space. Avoid placing furniture in the middle of the room. Position the largest piece of furniture, typically the bed, against a wall to open up the center area. Arrange smaller pieces along the perimeter to maintain clear floor space.
  6. Layer Light at Three Heights. Layer lighting with overhead fixtures, table lamps, and wall sconces to eliminate dark corners. Use LED bulbs in daylight color temperature to mimic natural light. Place lamps at different heights to create depth. Consider string lights or LED strip lighting behind the headboard for ambient lighting that makes the wall recede.
  7. Double Your Space With Glass. Hang a large mirror on the wall opposite the main window to double the apparent light and space. Use mirrored closet doors or furniture to reflect light throughout the room. Avoid placing mirrors where they reflect clutter or create confusing reflections. A single large mirror works better than multiple small ones for creating spaciousness.
  8. Edit Everything Ruthlessly. Keep surfaces clear of unnecessary items. Store belongings in closed containers or drawers rather than leaving them visible. Choose a simple color scheme with no more than three main colors. Select furniture with clean lines and avoid busy patterns on large items like bedspreads or curtains.
