How to Paint an Interior Room Like a Professional

Paint is the most transformative, low-cost upgrade you can make to any interior space. A fresh coat doesn't just change the color; it cleans up the geometry of a room, hides the scuffs of daily life, and resets the mood of your home. The difference between a DIY job that looks amateur and one that looks seamless lies entirely in the hours spent before you even open a paint can. Mastering the walls starts with patience. If you rush the prep work, you will spend twice as long fixing drips, bleeding tape lines, and uneven patches later. When done well, the paint glides on smooth, the edges remain razor-sharp, and the finish cures into a durable, uniform surface that stands up to the wear of a busy household.

  1. Protect Everything First. Move all furniture to the center of the room and cover it with plastic drop cloths. Remove switch plates and outlet covers, placing the screws in a sandwich bag so they don't get lost.
  2. Start with Clean Walls. Wipe down all surfaces with a mixture of mild dish soap and water to remove dust, cobwebs, and surface oils. Let the walls dry completely before moving to the next step.
  3. Smooth Out Imperfections. Fill nail holes or dents with lightweight spackle using a putty knife. Once dry, sand the spots smooth with 120-grit sandpaper until they are flush with the surrounding drywall.
  4. Seal Crisp Edge Lines. Apply painter's tape along baseboards, window trim, and door frames. Press the edge of the tape down firmly with a putty knife to ensure a tight seal that prevents paint bleed.
  5. Define the Edges First. Use an angled sash brush to paint a 2-3 inch border around the corners, ceiling line, and trim. Work in small sections, keeping a 'wet edge' so the paint doesn't dry before you roll the walls.
  6. Roll Even Coats Fast. Use a 3/8-inch nap roller to apply paint to the center of the walls in a large 'W' or 'M' pattern. Fill in the pattern with vertical strokes, overlapping slightly with the cut-in area to ensure a consistent texture.
