How to Style a Nightstand That Actually Works
Nightstands are the easiest furniture piece to overthink and the hardest to get right. You walk past it twice a day, reach across it in the dark, and it sets the visual tone for your whole bedroom. A cluttered nightstand reads as chaos. A bare one feels cold. The trick is restraint—picking the few things that genuinely serve you, then arranging them so they look like they belong there, not like they just landed. This is where the difference between a bedroom that feels like a retreat and one that feels like a holding pattern lives.
- Start With a Blank Slate. Remove everything from your nightstand surface and drawer. This is not a light sweep—take it all off. Measure the surface dimensions (length, width, height) so you know what scale of objects will work. A standard nightstand is 28 to 32 inches wide and 24 to 28 inches deep. - Live With It First. Once you've arranged your pieces, don't touch it for a week. Use it, look at it, sleep next to it. Does the lamp position work? Do you reach for the functional zone easily?
