How to Add Color to a Neutral Room

Transform a neutral room by layering colorful elements like throw pillows, artwork, rugs, and plants while keeping larger furniture pieces as your neutral foundation.

  1. Pick Your Color Story. Start with one or two main colors that speak to you, then add one accent color for visual interest. Look at colors you already love in your wardrobe or favorite artwork for inspiration. Warm colors like coral, gold, and terracotta create cozy energy, while cool colors like navy, sage green, and dusty blue feel calming and sophisticated.
  2. Layer Textiles for Impact. Swap out neutral throw pillows, blankets, and curtains for colorful versions. This is the quickest and most affordable way to introduce color. Mix different textures like velvet pillows with woven throws, or silk curtains with cotton rugs. Start with larger pieces like curtains or a statement rug, then layer in smaller textiles.
  3. Introduce Natural Green Tones. Add plants in colorful pots or planters to introduce natural green tones and vibrant container colors. Choose plants that thrive in your room's light conditions. Fiddle leaf figs, snake plants, and pothos work well in most spaces. Use ceramic pots in your chosen color palette or natural materials like terracotta and woven baskets.
  4. Frame Your Color Vision. Hang artwork that incorporates your color scheme. Mix different sizes and frame styles for visual interest, but keep the color story consistent. You can create a gallery wall with a mix of photos, prints, and small paintings, or choose one large statement piece. Even colorful frames around black and white photos can add your desired hues.
  5. Curate Colorful Accessories. Display colorful books, vases, candles, and decorative objects on shelves, coffee tables, and side tables. Group items in odd numbers and vary heights for the most pleasing arrangements. Colored glassware, ceramic bowls, or small sculptures can introduce pops of color while serving functional purposes.
  6. Go Bold with One Anchor. If you're ready for a bigger commitment, paint or reupholster one piece of furniture in a bold color. An accent chair, ottoman, or even a bookshelf can become a room's focal point. Choose something that won't break the budget if you decide to change it later.
