How to Properly Stain Your Outdoor Deck
D•eck maintenance is the difference between a backyard asset and a rotting liability. A properly stained deck doesn't just look better; it actively repels moisture and halts the sun's degradation of the wood fibers. When you do this right, you aren't just applying color, you are sealing the deck against the inevitable damage caused by seasonal expansion and contraction. Done well, your finish will last three to five years before needing a light refresh. Avoid the urge to rush the drying process or skip the sanding stage. If you apply stain to dirty or damp wood, you are trapping problems beneath the surface, which leads to peeling, bubbling, and premature decay. Commit to the prep work, and the staining process itself becomes the easy part.
- Clear and Clean Thoroughly. Remove all furniture and debris from the deck surface. Apply a high-quality oxygen-based deck cleaner and scrub with a stiff-bristle brush to remove mildew, dirt, and dead wood fibers.
- Let Wood Dry Completely. Wait at least 48 hours for the wood to dry completely after cleaning. Test dryness by dropping a few beads of water on the boards; if the wood absorbs the water immediately, you are ready to proceed.
- Sand with the Grain. Use an orbital sander with 60 to 80-grit sandpaper to smooth out splintered areas and open up the wood pores. Focus on high-traffic areas and remove any loose, old stain from previous years.
- Cut In Edges First. Use a small brush to cut in the stain along the edges, corners, and difficult spots where the decking meets the house or railings. Work in manageable sections to maintain a wet edge.
- Stain with a Light Touch. Apply the stain using a stain pad on a pole or a wide brush. Work in the direction of the boards, staining two or three boards at a time from one end to the other to avoid lap marks.
- Smooth and Let Cure. If the wood absorbs the stain unevenly, use a dry brush to smooth out any heavy spots or puddles. Let the deck cure for at least 24 hours before walking on it or replacing furniture.
