How to Install Floating Shelves

Floating shelves are the ultimate solution for clean, modern storage that keeps your floor space open and your walls looking uncluttered. Unlike traditional shelves with visible L-brackets, these rely on a hidden internal mounting system that provides a sleek, architectural look. When done well, the shelf appears to grow directly out of the drywall, holding your books or decor without any visible means of support. The secret to a successful installation lies entirely in the structure behind the drywall. If you skip the studs, the shelf will eventually sag, tilt, or pull away entirely under weight. By focusing on finding your wall framing first and ensuring absolute level, you transform a potentially flimsy shelf into a permanent, high-strength feature of your room.

  1. Find the Wall's Hidden Frame. Use a stud finder to identify the vertical framing members behind your wall. Mark the center of each stud clearly with a pencil, ensuring the marks align with where you want your shelf to sit.
  2. Get Perfectly Level. Hold your bracket against the wall over your marked stud locations. Place a long spirit level on top of the bracket to ensure it is perfectly horizontal before marking your pilot hole locations.
  3. Drill Before Fastening. Drill pilot holes into the marked stud centers using a drill bit slightly smaller than your mounting screws. This prevents the wood studs from splitting when you drive the lag bolts home.
  4. Anchor Into Studs Firmly. Drive the mounting screws or lag bolts through the bracket and into the studs. Tighten them firmly, but be careful not to overtighten and strip the hole in the wood.
  5. Seat Shelf Against Wall. Align the pre-drilled holes in the back of the shelf with the steel rods or arms of the mounting bracket. Push the shelf firmly against the wall until it sits flush against the drywall.
  6. Lock Set Screws Tight. Most floating shelves include small set screws located on the underside of the shelf. Tighten these with an Allen wrench to lock the shelf onto the bracket arms so it cannot slide forward.
