How to Safely Mount a Large Television to Drywall

Television mounting is the gold standard for a clean living room, but the weight of modern large-format screens means you cannot rely on drywall anchors alone. Drywall is designed to hide wires and provide a finished look, not to support the heavy, concentrated load of a pivoting wall mount. Done well, your television will sit flush, level, and rock-solid against the wall with no fear of structural failure. The secret lies in locating your studs accurately and ensuring the mount's center of gravity is properly supported. Follow these steps, and you will have a professional-grade installation that keeps your hardware safe for years to come.

  1. Find the studs first. Use a stud finder to locate the center of the wooden studs behind your drywall. Mark the vertical center of each stud clearly with a pencil.
  2. Level the wall plate. Hold the wall plate against the wall at your desired height. Use a bubble level to ensure the plate is perfectly horizontal before marking the mounting holes.
  3. Drill pilot holes carefully. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of your lag bolts to drill into the marked centers of the studs. This prevents the wood from splitting when you drive the bolts.
  4. Drive lag bolts home. Align the wall plate with your pilot holes and drive the lag bolts through the plate into the studs using a socket wrench. Do not overtighten, as you can strip the wood fibers inside the stud.
  5. Attach rails to TV. Lay your television face down on a soft, clean surface like a blanket. Screw the mounting rails into the VESA holes on the back of the TV using the manufacturer-provided hardware.
  6. Lock it down tight. Lift the television with a partner and hook the rails onto the wall plate. Once positioned, tighten the safety screws at the bottom of the rails to prevent the unit from being knocked off the wall.
