How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Any Room

Measure your room and furniture layout, then follow the 8-inch rule: leave at least 8 inches of bare floor around the rug's perimeter, or go large enough to fit all furniture legs on the rug.

  1. Lock in Your Boundaries First. Use a tape measure to get the exact length and width of your room. Write these numbers down. For rooms with unusual shapes, measure the main seating or focal area where the rug will sit. This gives you the maximum rug size that will work in your space.
  2. Map Your Furniture Zones. Look at how your furniture is currently arranged or how you want it arranged. In living rooms, focus on the main seating group around a coffee table. In dining rooms, consider the table and chairs. In bedrooms, think about the bed placement and walking paths around it.
  3. Pick Your Leg Placement Strategy. Choose one of three approaches: all furniture legs on the rug (most luxurious look), front legs only on the rug (most common and budget-friendly), or all furniture legs off the rug with at least 6-8 inches of space between furniture and rug edge (works for smaller rugs in large rooms).
  4. Do the Room-Specific Math. For living rooms, add the depth of your sofa plus 14-30 inches to get rug length, and add 8-16 inches to the width of your seating area. For dining rooms, add 48-60 inches to both table length and width to accommodate pulled-out chairs. For bedrooms, choose a rug that extends 18-24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
  5. Think Bigger, Not Smaller. Avoid rugs that are too small for the space. A tiny rug in a large room looks lost and makes the space feel disconnected. When in doubt, go larger rather than smaller. The rug should anchor the furniture grouping and define the conversation or activity area.
  6. Match Available Standard Sizes. Compare your calculated ideal size to standard rug dimensions: 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, and 12x15 feet. Pick the closest standard size that meets your minimum requirements. Remember that rug sizes can vary slightly between manufacturers.
  7. Live with It First. Use painter's tape to outline the rug size on your floor, or lay out newspaper sheets to visualize the footprint. Live with this outline for a few days, walking around it and using the furniture normally. This helps you confirm the size feels right before making the purchase.
