How to Create a Gallery Wall

Plan your layout on the floor first, then hang pieces 57-60 inches from floor to center of artwork, working from the center outward.

  1. Gather All Your Pieces. Collect all the pieces you want to include - photos, paintings, prints, mirrors, or decorative objects. Lay them out on a large table or the floor to see what you're working with. Group pieces by size, color, or theme if you want a cohesive look, or mix different styles for an eclectic gallery wall.
  2. Map It Out First. Create paper templates by tracing each frame on kraft paper or newspaper, then cut them out. Tape these templates to your wall to experiment with arrangements without making holes. Start with your largest or most eye-catching piece as an anchor, then build around it. Keep 2-3 inches between frames for breathing room.
  3. Find Eye Level. Measure 57-60 inches up from the floor and mark a light pencil line across your wall. This is where the center of your artwork should align, which puts pieces at average eye level. For rooms with high ceilings, you can go slightly higher.
  4. Mark Every Hole. Once you're happy with your paper layout, mark the top center of each template with a pencil. Remove the templates and measure down from each mark to find where your nail or hook needs to go. For frames with wire, pull the wire taut and measure from the wire's peak to the frame's top.
  5. Secure Your Hardware. Use appropriate hardware for your wall type and artwork weight. Picture hanging strips work for lightweight pieces on drywall. For heavier items, use wall anchors or find studs with a stud finder. Hammer nails at a slight upward angle, or install screws and wall anchors according to package directions.
  6. Hang Center Out. Start hanging from the center of your arrangement and work outward. Use a level to ensure each piece hangs straight. Step back frequently to check spacing and alignment. Make small adjustments as needed - it's normal to tweak positions until everything looks balanced.
  7. Perfect Your Display. Once everything is hung, add any small decorative elements like floating shelves or wall sconces if desired. Take a photo of your finished gallery wall so you can recreate the arrangement if you ever need to move pieces.
