How to Hang Curtains to Make Windows Look Taller

Mount curtain rods 4-6 inches above the window frame and extend them 3-4 inches beyond each side. Choose floor-length curtains that just touch or puddle slightly on the ground.

  1. Mark Rod Height Strategically. Measure 4-6 inches above your window frame and mark the center point. For standard 8-foot ceilings, mount the rod about 4 inches above. For higher ceilings, go up to 6 inches or even closer to the ceiling. Use a level to mark horizontal lines extending 3-4 inches beyond each side of the window frame. This creates the illusion that your window is both taller and wider.
  2. Secure Brackets Level and Strong. Drill pilot holes at your marked spots and secure the brackets with appropriate screws. For drywall, use wall anchors rated for at least 20 pounds. For studs, use wood screws directly into the framing. Make sure brackets are level and can support the weight of your curtains. The rod should extend at least 3 inches beyond the window on each side.
  3. Go Floor-Length, Always. Choose curtains that reach from your newly positioned rod all the way to the floor. They should either just kiss the floor or puddle slightly (1-2 inches of extra fabric). Avoid curtains that hang above the floor or window sill, as this breaks the vertical line and makes windows appear shorter. Custom length or hemming may be necessary to achieve the perfect length.
  4. Pick Vertical Lines Only. Select curtains with vertical stripes, pleats, or solid colors rather than horizontal patterns. Vertical lines draw the eye upward and emphasize height. If you prefer patterns, choose ones with vertical elements or small, subtle designs that don't create strong horizontal breaks across the fabric.
  5. Hang Straight, Expose Fully. Install your curtains on the rod, ensuring they hang straight without bunching. When closed, curtains should just meet in the middle or have a slight overlap. When open, push them all the way to the outer edges of the rod to expose the maximum window area. This maintains the illusion of a larger window while allowing maximum light.
