How to Install a Video Doorbell
Installing a video doorbell typically involves removing your old doorbell, connecting new wires to your existing doorbell wiring, mounting the new device, and setting up the mobile app for remote access.
- Kill Power First. Locate your home's circuit breaker and turn off power to the doorbell circuit. Remove the screws holding your current doorbell button and carefully pull it away from the wall. You'll see two wires connected to the back - disconnect these wires and note which wire went to which terminal.
- Test Power Before Proceeding. Most homes have adequate wiring for video doorbells, but verify you have at least 16-volt AC power. Use a multimeter to test the voltage between the two doorbell wires. If you don't have existing doorbell wiring, you'll need to either run new wire or choose a battery-powered model.
- Secure the Bracket Straight. Hold the mounting bracket against your door frame or wall where you want the doorbell. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. For wood surfaces, drill pilot holes slightly smaller than your screws. For brick or stucco, use appropriate anchors. Secure the bracket with the provided screws.
- Wire to Terminals Correctly. Thread your existing doorbell wires through the back of the video doorbell. Connect each wire to the corresponding terminal on the device - most video doorbells have clearly labeled terminals that accept either wire. Ensure connections are tight and secure.
- Click Unit Into Place. Carefully tuck the wires back into the wall opening and align the doorbell with the mounting bracket. Push the device onto the bracket until it clicks securely into place. Some models require a final screw to lock the unit and prevent theft.
- Verify Power and Chime. Turn the power back on at your circuit breaker. Press the doorbell button to ensure your existing chime works properly. The doorbell should power on and begin its initialization sequence, usually indicated by LED lights or sounds.
- Connect to Wi-Fi Network. Download the manufacturer's app on your smartphone and create an account. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your doorbell to your home Wi-Fi network. This typically involves scanning a QR code on the device and entering your Wi-Fi password.
- Test All Features End-to-End. Configure motion detection zones, notification preferences, and video quality settings through the app. Test the two-way audio by having someone ring the doorbell while you're inside. Verify you can see the live video feed and communicate clearly through the device.
