How to Install a Sump Pump

Water in your basement is the enemy of a dry, healthy home, and a properly installed sump pump is your first line of defense against flooding. A sump pump sits in a basin that collects groundwater, pumping it out and away from your foundation before it ever has a chance to pool on your concrete floor. Done well, this project creates a permanent mechanical solution to moisture control that operates quietly and reliably for years. The installation process demands precision with both plumbing and excavation. You are essentially creating a low point in your basement floor where water naturally gravitates, then bridging that basin to the outside world with a discharge line. It is heavy, dirty work, but it is entirely manageable if you respect the gravity of the plumbing and ensure your check valve is installed in the correct orientation to prevent backflow.

  1. Find Your Water's Low Point. Select a spot at the lowest point of your basement floor, usually near a corner or where water naturally collects. Use a hammer drill to score the concrete circle, then break it out with a sledgehammer to create a hole slightly larger than your sump basin.
  2. Dig Deep, Pack Tight. Dig out the soil to accommodate the basin until the rim is flush or slightly below the concrete level. Backfill the base with a few inches of crushed stone to ensure proper drainage and stability.
  3. Route Water Out and Away. Run a PVC discharge line from the basement floor up the wall and through the rim joist to the exterior. Use 1.5-inch schedule 40 PVC to ensure durability and proper flow rates.
  4. Set the Float Switch Free. Place the pump inside the basin, ensuring the float switch has enough clearance to move up and down without hitting the basin walls. Connect the pump discharge to your vertical PVC pipe using a rubber coupling.
  5. Stop Backflow Before It Starts. Install a check valve on the vertical discharge line, ensuring the arrow on the valve points upward toward the exit. This prevents water from flowing back into the basin once the pump shuts off.
  6. Lock It Down, Power It Right. Attach the basin lid securely and seal any gaps with hydraulic cement or silicone. Run your pump's power cord to a GFCI-protected outlet, ideally on a dedicated circuit.
