Install Decorative Border Tiles and Mosaic Accents in Your Bathroom

Add visual interest to your bathroom by installing a decorative tile border or mosaic accent strip using tile adhesive, spacers, and grout to create professional-looking results.

  1. Map Your Border Placement. Measure your wall space and mark where you want the decorative border or mosaic accent. Typically, borders work well at chair rail height (around 36 inches) or as a backsplash accent. Lay out your tiles dry on the floor first to ensure proper spacing and alignment. Mark reference lines on the wall using a level to keep everything straight.
  2. Ready the Wall Surface. Clean the wall thoroughly and ensure it's completely dry. If installing over existing tile, lightly sand the surface for better adhesion. For drywall surfaces, apply primer if needed. Check that the wall is plumb and flat - any irregularities will show in your finished border.
  3. Spread the Mortar Bond. Mix tile adhesive according to package directions. Using a notched trowel, spread adhesive evenly along your marked reference line. Work in small sections (about 3 feet at a time) to prevent the adhesive from drying out before you place the tiles.
  4. Set Tiles in Place. Starting from your center point, press each tile firmly into the adhesive with a slight twisting motion. Use tile spacers to maintain consistent gaps. For mosaic sheets, press the entire sheet at once, then use a rubber float to ensure all pieces are level and properly embedded. Check alignment frequently with your level.
  5. Trim Edges Precisely. Measure and cut any tiles needed for corners or edges using a wet tile saw or manual tile cutter. For small mosaic pieces, you can often break them cleanly with tile nippers. Test fit each cut piece before applying adhesive.
  6. Clear Excess Mortar. While the adhesive is still workable, clean any excess from the tile faces and joints using a damp sponge. Remove tile spacers before the adhesive fully sets. Allow the installation to cure for 24 hours before grouting.
  7. Seal the Joints. Mix grout according to package instructions. Using a diagonal sweeping motion, work grout into all joints with a rubber float. Remove excess grout from tile surfaces with a damp sponge, rinsing frequently. Allow grout to cure for the recommended time, then apply grout sealer if needed.
